Studying in the United Kingdom remains a dream for thousands of international students every year. With world-class universities, globally respected degrees, and a vibrant cultural scene, the UK remains one of the top destinations for higher education. But as with any journey abroad, it’s important to stay updated on government policies that may affect your study and post-study plans.

Recently, the UK government announced two major updates that international students should prepare for:

1. Higher Student Visa Maintenance Requirements (Effective November 11, 2025)

If you’re applying for a UK Student visa on or after November 11, 2025, you’ll need to show proof of higher financial capacity to cover your living expenses:

  • £1,529 per month if studying in London (for up to 9 months/1 academic year)
  • £1,171 per month if studying outside London

This is an increase from the previous requirements of £1,483 (London) and £1,136 (outside London).

👉 Tip: Check your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) to confirm whether your institution is considered within the London area. While current students don’t need to reapply under the new rules, everyone should prepare for rising living costs as these figures reflect the UK’s cost of living trends.

2. Graduate Route Duration Changes (Effective January 1, 2027)

The UK’s Graduate Route has been a popular pathway for international students to gain valuable work experience after graduation. Currently:

  • Bachelor’s & Master’s graduates: up to 2 years
  • Doctoral graduates (PhD): up to 3 years

From January 1, 2027, the Graduate Route will be shortened for bachelor’s and master’s graduates to 18 months, while doctoral graduates will still enjoy the full 3 years.

This change will affect both future applicants and current students who plan to graduate in 2027 or later.

Why the UK Remains a Top Choice

Despite these adjustments, the UK continues to offer:

Importantly, these updates do not affect eligibility for the Skilled Worker visa or the Health and Care Worker visa, which remain strong long-term options for international graduates.

Final Thoughts

The UK remains a premier destination for international students; however, planning ahead is more crucial than ever. Whether it’s budgeting for higher living costs or adjusting your career timeline to fit the new Graduate Route, staying informed will help you make the most of your UK study experience.
